The Light of the World

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 8:12

Humanity has in itself no light. Apart from Christ we are like an unkindled taper, like the moon when her face is turned away from the sun; we have not a single ray of brightness to shed into the darkness of the world. But when we turn toward the Sun of Righteousness, when we come in touch with Christ, the whole soul is aglow with the brightness of the divine presence.

Christ's followers are to be more than a light in the midst of men. They are the light of the world. Jesus says to all who have named His name, You have given yourselves to Me, and I have given you to the world as My representatives. As the Father had sent Him into the world, so, He declares, "have I also sent them into the world." John 17:18. As Christ is the channel for the revelation of the Father, so we are to be the channel for the revelation of Christ.

While our Saviour is the great source of illumination, forget not, O Christian, that He is revealed through humanity. God's blessings are bestowed through human instrumentality. Christ Himself came to the world as the Son of man. Humanity, united to the divine nature, must touch humanity. The church of Christ, every individual disciple of the Master, is heaven's appointed channel for the revelation of God to men. Angels of glory wait to communicate through you heaven's light and power to souls that are ready to perish. Shall the human agent fail of accomplishing his appointed work? Oh, then to that degree is the world robbed of the promised influence of the Holy Spirit!

Y éstos eran más nobles que los que estaban en Tesalónica, pues recibieron la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando cada día las Escrituras para ver si estas cosas eran así.

Mi esposo, el pastor José Bates, el Hno. Pierce, el Hno. Edson, hombre inteligente, noble y leal, y muchos otros cuyos nombres ahora no recuerdo, se encontraban entre los que, después que pasó el tiempo [22 de octubre] en 1844, se dedicaron a buscar la verdad. Estos hombres se juntaban en nuestras importantes reuniones para escudriñar la verdad como si fuera un tesoro escondido.
Yo me reuní con ellos, y estudiamos y oramos fervientemente, porque sentíamos que debíamos aprender la verdad de Dios. A menudo nos quedábamos orando hasta tarde, y a veces la noche entera, para recibir luz y estudiar la Palabra. Al ayunar y orar recibíamos gran poder. Pero yo no podía comprender los razonamientos de los hermanos. Mi mente estaba cerrada, por así decirlo, y no podía entender lo que estábamos estudiando. Entonces el Espíritu de Dios descendía sobre mí y me llevaba en visión, y se me daba una clara explicación de los pasajes que habíamos estado estudiando, con instrucciones relativas a la actitud que debíamos asumir con respecto a la verdad y el deber.
Una línea de verdad que se extendía desde ese tiempo hasta el momento de entrar en la ciudad de Dios, aparecía nítidamente delante de mí, y yo daba a mis hermanos y hermanas la instrucción que a su vez el Señor me había dado. Ellos sabían que cuando yo no estaba en visión no podía entender esos asuntos, y aceptaban como luz del cielo las revelaciones que yo recibía. Así fueron firmemente establecidos los puntos principales de nuestra fe, tal como los sostenemos en la actualidad. Se definía claramente punto tras punto. . .
Todo el grupo de creyentes estaba unido en la verdad. Hubo quienes vinieron con doctrinas extrañas, pero nunca tuvimos temor de enfrentarlos. Nuestra experiencia fue maravillosamente consolidada por la revelación del Espíritu Santo. . .
Poco después del nacimiento de mi segundo hijo [1849], estuvimos sumamente perplejos con respecto a ciertos puntos de doctrina. Le pedí al Señor que desatara mi mente para poder comprender su Palabra. Persecuted for Righteousness

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Matthew 5:10

Jesus does not present to His followers the hope of attaining earthly glory and riches, and of having a life free from trial, but He presents to them the privilege of walking with their Master in the paths of self-denial and reproach, because the world knows them not.

He who came to redeem the lost world was opposed by the united forces of the adversaries of God and man. In an unpitying confederacy, evil men and evil angels arrayed themselves against the Prince of Peace. Though His every word and act breathed of divine compassion, His unlikeness to the world provoked the bitterest hostility. Because He would give no license for the exercise of the evil passions of our nature, He aroused the fiercest opposition and enmity. So it is with all who will live godly in Christ Jesus. Between righteousness and sin, love and hatred, truth and falsehood, there is an irrepressible conflict. When one presents the love of Christ and the beauty of holiness, he is drawing away the subjects of Satan's kingdom, and the prince of evil is aroused to resist it. Persecution and reproach await all who are imbued with the Spirit of Christ. The character of the persecution changes with the times, but the principle--the spirit that underlies it--is the same that has slain the chosen of the Lord ever since the days of Abel.

As men seek to come into harmony with God, they will find that the offense of the cross has not ceased. Principalities and powers and wicked spirits in high places are arrayed against all who yield obedience to the law of heaven. Therefore, so far from causing grief, persecution should bring joy to the disciples of Christ, for it is an evidence that they are following in the steps of their Master.

While the Lord has not promised His people exemption from trials, He has promised that which is far better. He has said, "As thy days, so shall thy strength be." "My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Deuteronomy 33:25; 2 Corinthians 12:9. If you are called to go through the fiery furnace for His sake, Jesus will be by your side even as He was with the faithful three in Babylon. Those who love their Redeemer will rejoice at every opportunity of sharing with Him humiliation and reproach. The love they bear their Lord makes suffering for His sake sweet.

EL MENSAJE DE DIOS PARA SU PUEBLO

 

"No temas en nada lo que vas a padecer. He aquí el diablo echará a algunos de vosotros en la cárcel para que seáis probados, y tendréis tribulación por diez días. Sé fiel hasta la muerte y yo te daré la corona de la vida"

 

 (Apoc. 2:10).

Juan había estado estrechamente relacionado con el Salvador durante su ministerio. Él había escuchado sus maravillosas enseñanzas, visto sus notables obras y su testimonio fue dado claramente. Habló de todo corazón y movido por el amor a Cristo que inundaba su alma, y ningún poder sería capaz de contener sus palabras...
Al igual que su Maestro, Juan soportó con paciencia cada intento de darle muerte. Cuando sus enemigos lo lanzaron en un caldero de aceite hirviente, creyeron que no volverían a escuchar nada de él. Pero no bien se habían pronunciado las palabras de origen satánico: "Así perecen todos los que creen en ese engañador, Jesús de Nazaret, Juan declaró: "Mi Maestro soportó con paciencia todo lo que Satanás y sus ángeles pudieron idear para humillarlo y torturarlo. Dio su vida para salvar al mundo. Murió para que podamos tener vida. Me honra que se me permita sufrir por su causa. Sólo soy un hombre débil y pecador, pero Cristo era santo, limpio, inmaculado y apartado de los pecadores. El no pecó, ni pronunció palabra ociosa con su boca". Las palabras de Juan, mientras sufría a manos de sus enemigos, tuvieron su influencia y fue sacado del caldero por los mismos que lo arrojaron en él.
Poco después, Juan fue enviado a la isla de Patmos donde, separado de sus compañeros en la fe, sus enemigos suponían que moriría debido a las penalidades y el abandono; pero aun allí Juan ganó amigos y conversos. Pensaban que por fin habían puesto al fiel testigo donde ya no podría molestar más a Israel o a los impíos gobernantes del mundo. Pero todo el universo celestial observó el conflicto con el anciano discípulo y su separación de sus compañeros en la fe.
Dios, Cristo y la hueste celestial fueron compañeros de Juan en la isla de Patmos. De ellos recibió instrucciones que impartió a aquellos que con él estaban separados del mundo. Allí escribió las revelaciones y visiones que recibió de Dios para narrar las cosas que ocurrirían en el período final de la historia de esta tierra. Cuando su voz ya no testificara más de la verdad, cuando no pudiese atestiguar más en favor de Aquel que amaba y servía, los mensajes que se le dieron en aquella costa rocosa y árida se esparcirían como una lámpara que alumbra. Toda nación, tribu, lengua y pueblo llegaría a conocer el seguro propósito del Señor, no sólo con respecto a la nación judía, sino a cada nación de la tierra (Manuscrito 150, 1899).

Blessed are the Pure in Heart

Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

Psalms 24:3-4

When Christ shall come in His glory, the wicked cannot endure to behold Him. The light of His presence, which is life to those who love Him, is death to the ungodly. The expectation of His coming is to them a "fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation." Hebrews 10:27. When He shall appear, they will pray to be hidden from the face of Him who died to redeem them.

But to hearts that have become purified through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, all is changed. These can know God. Moses was hid in the cleft of the rock when the glory of the Lord was revealed to him; and it is when we are hid in Christ that we behold the love of God.

"He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the King shall be his friend." Proverbs 22:11. By faith we behold Him here and now. In our daily experience we discern His goodness and compassion in the manifestation of His providence. We recognize Him in the character of His Son. The Holy Spirit takes the truth concerning God and Him whom He hath sent, and opens it to the understanding and to the heart. The pure in heart see God in a new and endearing relation, as their Redeemer; and while they discern the purity and loveliness of His character, they long to reflect His image. They see Him as a Father longing to embrace a repenting son, and their hearts are filled with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

The pure in heart discern the Creator in the works of His mighty hand, in the things of beauty that comprise the universe. In His written word they read in clearer lines the revelation of His mercy, His goodness, and His grace. The truths that are hidden from the wise and prudent are revealed to babes. The beauty and preciousness of truth, which are undiscerned by the worldly-wise, are constantly unfolding to those who have a trusting, childlike desire to know and to do the will of God. We discern the truth by becoming, ourselves, partakers of the divine nature.

The pure in heart live as in the visible presence of God during the time He apportions them in this world. And they will also see Him face to face in the future, immortal state, as did Adam when he walked and talked with God in Eden. "Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face." 1 Corinthians 13:12.

SOMOS OBJETO DEL AMOR INFINITO

Pero Dios, que es rico en misericordia, por su gran amor con que nos amó, aun estando nosotros muertos en pecados, nos dio vida juntamente con Cristo.

El corazón que se rinda a la sabia disciplina de Dios, habrá de confiar en cada manifestación de su providencia... La tentación procurará desalentarnos, pero, ¿qué se logra al ceder a la tentación? ¿Obtendrá, acaso, el alma algo mejor murmurando y quejándose de aquello que es la única fuente de poder? ¿Está el ancla echada dentro del velo? ¿Soportaremos la enfermedad? ¿Cuál será nuestro testimonio en los instantes finales de la vida, cuando los labios estén temblorosos por la muerte? ¡El ancla está firme! Yo sé que mi Redentor vive...

Oh Jesús precioso, amoroso, longánime, clemente ¡cuánto te adora mi alma! ¡Que un alma pobre, indigna, contaminada por el pecado pueda estar de pie delante del Dios santo, perfecta en justicia, sólo lo debemos a quien es nuestro Sustituto y Garantía! Maravíllense los cielos y asómbrese la tierra, que la raza caída sea objeto de su infinito amor y gozo. El Creador se regocija por ellos con cánticos celestiales, mientras el hombre que fuera contaminado por el pecado, ha venido a ser limpio por la justicia de Cristo, para presentarse ante el Padre libre de mácula pecaminosa; sin "mancha ni arruga ni cosa semejante" (Efe. 5: 27). "¿Quién acusará a los escogidos de Dios? Dios es el que justifica" (Rom. 8: 33).

Que toda alma débil y sacudida por la tempestad de las pruebas pueda anclarse en Jesucristo, y no centrarse tanto en sí misma como para pensar sólo en sus pequeños fracasos y en la interrupción de sus planes y esperanzas. ¿Acaso el plan de salvación no lo abarca todo? Si es el Dios infinito que me justifica, "¿quién es el que condenará? Cristo es el que murió" (Rom. 8: 34). ¡El es quien, al morir por el hombre, demostró que lo ama tanto como para morir por él! La ley condena al pecador y nos lleva hasta Cristo. Dios es quien justifica y perdona.

Satanás nos acusará y pedirá destruirnos, pero es Dios quien abrirá la puerta al refugio. Y es Dios el que justifica a quien traspasa el umbral de esa puerta. Entonces, si Dios es por nosotros, ¿quién podrá estar contra nosotros? ¡Oh, qué verdad gloriosa, brillante! ¿Por qué los hombres no pueden discernirla?...
Dios vive y reina. Todos los salvados deben luchar virilmente como soldados de Jesucristo; entonces sus nombres serán registrados en los libros del cielo como fieles y verdaderos.

Blessed are the pure in heart

 

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

- Matthew 5:8

The Jews were so exacting in regard to ceremonial purity that their regulations were extremely burdensome. Their minds were occupied with rules and restrictions and the fear of outward defilement, and they did not perceive the stain that selfishness and malice impart to the soul.

Jesus does not mention this ceremonial purity as one of the conditions of entering into His kingdom, but points out the need of purity of heart. The wisdom that is from above "is first pure." James 3:17. Into the city of God there will enter nothing that defiles. All who are to be dwellers there will here have become pure in heart. In one who is learning of Jesus, there will be manifest a growing distaste for careless manners, unseemly language, and coarse thought. When Christ abides in the heart, there will be purity and refinement of thought and manner.

But the words of Jesus, "Blessed are the pure in heart," have a deeper meaning--not merely pure in the sense in which the world understands purity, free from that which is sensual, pure from lust, but true in the hidden purposes and motives of the soul, free from pride and self-seeking, humble, unselfish, childlike.

Only like can appreciate like. Unless you accept in your own life the principle of self-sacrificing love, which is the principle of His character, you cannot know God. The heart that is deceived by Satan, looks upon God as a tyrannical, relentless being; the selfish characteristics of humanity, even of Satan himself, are attributed to the loving Creator. "Thou thoughtest," He says, "that I was altogether such an one as thyself." Psalm 50:21. His providences are interpreted as the expression of an arbitrary, vindictive nature. So with the Bible, the treasure house of the riches of His grace. The glory of its truths, that are as high as heaven and compass eternity, is undiscerned.

To the great mass of mankind, Christ Himself is "as a root out of a dry ground," and they see in Him "no beauty that" they "should desire Him." Isaiah 53:2. When Jesus was among men, the revelation of God in humanity, the scribes and Pharisees declared to Him, "Thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil." John 8:48. Even His disciples were so blinded by the selfishness of their hearts that they were slow to understand Him who had come to manifest to them the Father's love. This was why Jesus walked in solitude in the midst of men. He was understood fully in heaven alone.
